Digital Citizenship

It does take a village to raise a digital citizen and we each have a role to play! As global citizens, community members, parents, teachers, principals we can set the stage for our youth to develop the digital citizenship skills necessary to become the positive agents of change that our world needs.

A Digital Citizen constructs and applies one’s knowledge of the rules, rights and responsibilities of social conduct online. Digital Citizenship is about putting into practice the collective values of commitment, solidarity, equality, dignity, safety and respect for themselves and others everywhere.

Our approach consists of three main principles, respect, protect and educate.

  • To respect is to have regard for the feelings, wishes, rights or traditions of oneself and of others.
  • To protect is to keep oneself and others safe from harm or injury.
  • To educate is to construct intellectual, moral, and social knowledge and share it with others.

These principles are explored through nine themes that addresses the various components of digital citizenship. As students explore these themes they will become more knowledgeable and be able to apply their new knowledge in their activities online. Themes can be addressed one at a time, but more often than not many themes will be addressed at once from a different perspective. Ideally, these themes will be seamlessly integrated within other classroom activities where students can authentically learn about and put into practice competent digital citizen behaviours.
