“Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to ‘recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.’” (ALA, ACRL)

This includes:

  • Being able to recognize when there is a need for information
  • Having the ability to locate and evaluate the information using effective strategies
  • Using and/or sharing the information effectively, ethically and legally

Information literacy is a component of digital citizenship. In this digital era, we often seek information and media online. Therefore, we need to ensure that we are safe, critical and responsible when seeking, using or sharing content. It is important that we give our students opportunities to practice many of their digital citizenship skills in authentic activities.
